SASTRA YANTRA AND MANTRA FEDERATION (SYM)

SASTRA YANTRA AND MANTRA FEDERATION is a nonprofit organization working to enhance and promote the Yantra and Mantra art of the Cambodia Culture to the global and regional. Here below, let understand some of the art and concept of Yantra and Mantra.

Khmer Yantra (យ័ន្ត) and Mantra (មន្តគាថា) refer to sacred geometric designs (Yantra) and chanted magical syllables (Mantra) deeply rooted in Cambodian culture, particularly known through Sak Yant (magical tattoos) that offer protection, power, and good fortune, using ancient Khmer script (Khom Agkhara) derived from Sanskrit/Pali, originating from the Khmer Empire for warrior protection and evolving into spiritual empowerment symbols.

Key Concepts

  • Yantra (Yan/យ័ន្ត): A mystical diagram, often geometric, symbolizing divine energies or a specific blessing, forming the visual art of the tattoo.
  • Mantra (Mantra/មន្តគាថា): Sacred sounds or phrases, often Pali/Sanskrit, believed to possess spiritual power, embedded within the Yantra design.
  • Sak Yant (សាក់យ័ន្ត): The practice of tattooing these Yantras and Mantras onto the body, a tradition existing in Cambodia for centuries, especially popular during war for protection.
